Title: Rotton wood and a dodgy finial...

The story behind this is on my blog, so I won't type it all again here, but...

A very, very rotton piece of ash, that ended up very shallow after removing the worst (Ha!) of the spalt. So a sit down form was out and I put a pedestal on it (not really my kind of thing, but what else was there to do). Then it needed a top to balance it...so a finial top...

But I wanted the finial to look different from the norm...

Now I'm not sure at all...

on the fire, new finial, or something else?

Hi Andy,
           the finial works for me but the base doesn't. Would it look better if there was a similarity in size between the top of the base and the bottom of the finial? Otherwise I like it.

Hi Andy,
You could have kept turning it and made a thimble !!!!!
On a more serious theme - the finial is fine  and I like the ash centre form but agree with John about the base/pedistal.For me the pedistal looks to high and could have done without the top tapered curved section.
Still it is too good to be put on the fire.

Seriously, many thanks for the comments. At least the finial isn't far out.

The foot sadly needs to be that size to support the form, so couldn't be reworked and continue to fullfil its function. But then that's the problem often when making something on-the-fly as opposed to a planned outcome. Oh well. It was fun to produce something from a piece of milkyway wood.
