Title: Pyrographed vessels...
Post by: Andy Coates on September 22, 2011, 05:09:56 PM
Having recently acquired a Burnmaster Pyro unit (available from Classic Handtools), and then a woodart unit (available from Simon Hope) I've been playing with some ideas that would have taken forever with my old Peter Child machine (available from...well, you know where!).

Here are a few of the resulting pieces...

They take a long time but are great fun to make and decorate.

If you want a review of the pyro machines there's one on my blog.

c&c welcome as ever...

Andy

Hi Andy, I like the look of these it must have taken a long time to do the Hollow form any chance of a larger photograph of the Platter so I can see the detail. Regards John

Is that not big enough?

The platter appeals to my sense of humour, I do like it.

The Vase/Pot has an ethnic look about it, I'm guessing that was your desire and inspiration, either that or just lots of fun in the making.

Any chance of a link to the Pyro machine page?

Hi Andy,
I really like the platter, the blue is just right . I also like the pot/ginger jar. I have just done one similar following the threads about inspiration, when I get it back from the shop (assuming it's not sold) I will post a picture.

Hi Andy,
I like both of these just one question, what colour you going to do on the hollow form ?

Cheers Martin.

I'm not even sure if I will, Martin. I like the scorched look, and I'm also worried that if I colour it and it looks awful then I've wasted a lot of time. I did a smaller vessel last night, a box, and I'll colour that today and if it's not really bad I'll post a picture tonight.

So here's the pyro box coloured. Orange stain (just so it wasn't my usual red!)...and because the box wasn't turned with a view to colouring the lid is quite thin walled and had to be stained inside and out due to wicking of the spirit stain...but it is just a test piece...

So...colour or not?

Hi Andy
I like these a lot, especially the Ginger Jar/pot. It reminds me of watching a film of someone having a bad dream (in a nice way!!!) or an LSD trance. (Not that I know what one of them is. Going back to what BHT said about the inspiration string, I have had part finished piece sitting on my hearth for two weeks now. I keep looking at it, and looking at it, and nothing comes. I guess I am just brain dead!!! Keep it up. Maybe we should have a go at a compilation piece where someone can display a part finished piece and then members can suggest what can be done with it. The turner chooses. Just a thought. Sorry Andy did not mean to steal your string.

Would'nt have chosen Orange lol, I like it and a spray of yellow stain over it brings outa new depth to the colour.

The test is now will they sell ? I do hope so.

Cheers Martin.

Now I think the Orange was inspired, it's taken a basic ethnic theme and made it feel Aztec or Inca on origin.

Andy,
I wouldn't have chosen orange but seeing it now I would have wished I had. It's lovely and I agree with
dr4gOnfly that it has an ethnic feel but I would have said it was more African. I still think the platter is the ispirational piece. The ratio of rim to bowl looks to be just right and as I said earlier the blue is the right blue, lighter would not have worked for me and I don't think darker would have either.

Thanks everyone. I think I've decided that they won't be coloured after all. I like the effect as they come off the pyro tool. They do need a UV protected finish, so I've gone for an artist's wood friendly varnish with added UV protection. I'll see how it looks tomorrow.

In the meantime the next one is finished and on the blog at:

Andy I am intrigued by your thought process in the making of the hollow form. I can see why you did the decoration the way you did but what made you write certain words  and also why some words were "bent"  the way they are?
I actually find random hard to do when burning as the natural way is to work in straight lines. I did look at your blog and saw how you blocked out but I would have thought that would encourage straight line working.

Hello John,

if you look at the WIP pic at the end of the last post you'll notice a shape that isn't a square. On this one I introduced two other shapes - a circle and a french curve-based shape, to break the pattern.

One of the main advantages of the  PPHA03 woodart machine and the Burnmaster is that their heat recovery time is so quick that you can "draw" curves with relative ease.

As for the words and non pictorial elements...well, that will remain a secret :)
