Hi all,
New here (just started turning again after a 2 year break) and thought I'd post my first attempt..
It's an "Ash, Ebony and sycamore" semi-hollow "thing."
Oh, please excuse the shoddy camera (phone.)

It doesn't appeal to me, but it's innovative and the mix of timbers seems to work fairly well. Not too sure about the line of the lid, as it doesn't flow from the line of the main form. On a positive note, it's indicative of the fact that you're free-thinking and prepared to have a go at your own thing.....can't be bad.

I'm new to this forum as well Andy and I hope you'll benefit for the comments from the members as I have.
Sadly, the piece does not work for me. I think it's the top that jars visually. But you do need to push things at bit get something different.

Thanks, and yeah I do actually agree (haven't turned anything in about 2 years..)
fortunately the "lid" was/is a scrap bit of sycamore and can (fairly) easily be changed. The original lid was to be made from ash also, but the piece I had - split.!
Back to the drawing board..

If the lid followed the line of the body it would look a lot better for me. A bit 'flying saucer' looking which is fine if that is what you want. Just a thought, if that centre piece (the dark part, was an insert that came out seperately, it would have that 'hidden secret' factor as well. As far as I can see the quality is fie, just the design which is the hard part as you will never please everyone with that.

An interesting return to turning. It's well finished but there are too many lines/shape changes for it to work well.
You might try a different lid shape but this may be a little too finished to do anything with now but I don't think it would take much to turn this or another similar piece into something that looks really good.

I'd been posting much the same as Pete had said... got timed out ... Very Susie Saucer in form-ish ... Would a more doomed lid with a repeat of the main form as a knob work.
Good to see your re-turn .. swell the numbers of forum users.

Welcome back to turning and the forum.
Despite what other have said :) I very much like this as it is quite different to what we normally see and that for me is refreshing. The shape I also like and ok there is a slight change in line of the lid but this I don't find a problem. It is well finished and the contrasting woods is also a positive, thanks for sharing and I am looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Still deciding what to actually do with it. Might play around with a few more "lid" ideas, see if I can follow the lines a bit closer.
