I had this 5"x2"x2" spindle blank in amongst a batch that I bought recently, and it was labelled as Kingwood...

...but I'm not absolutely sure that it is! I've had a search and couldn't really confirm it, one way or the other. It was dense, turned well and was quite oily. The finish is lemon oil, as I wanted a thin oil to penetrate the pores of the wood, but it has turned the sapwood quite yellowy....still, it's made a nice little piece.....shame I had only the one piece, really!

Yes, it looks like it could be kingwood.

Thank you, Paul. I hadn't realised that there was such a stark contrast between heartwood and sapwood....I think of Kingwood as being used for high quality office furniture, so finding a piece like this amongst my stock was a bit of a surprise.
Cheers...Les

Les,
the reaction causing colour change between growth wood when it becomes heart wood can be dramatic as you've noted.
I bought a walnut tree a couple of months ago. The growth wood is a beautifly milky white and the heart that wonderful brown, the grain is not as distinctive by it's colour bands as your Kingwood but non-the-less dramatic.

Hi les,
difficult to tell from a picture but Kingwood has a purplish tinge to it. Could It be Ovangkol?

Hi Les,
To add further to it, could it be Zebrano ... http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-identification/hardwoods/zebrawood/ (http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-identification/hardwoods/zebrawood/) ... I'd a bowl blank much the same in grain.
This is one very nice jar, like the form. Well done.
