Does anyone know of a certificated chainsaw safety course please?
I live in Wiltshire and I’m happy to travel a fair distance (up to two hour drive).
I’ve Googled and asked around locally but there doesn’t seem to be anything.
When I say certificated I mean not Nobby down the road who has had a chainsaw for years, I’d like proper training.

Have no Idea re your area however if you have an Agriculture College or similar within range it may be worth giving them a look. Other option is contact a reputable tree felling firm and ask if they can point you in the right direction. Chainsaws need the respect you are looking to give them, one lapse of concentration and it could be life changing. Good luck in your quest.

Hello Redhill, many thanks for your reply - yes there is a agriculture college not far from me - they did say I could tagg onto the end of a course, part of that course is tree felling, but it sounded very half hearted and probably not what Im after.

They do courses in chainsaw maintenance and use at Lackham College. Worth having a look to see if they have the sort of thing you are looking for.

Hi Dancie, Glad to hear that you are trying to find a proper training course. You could try "Sam Stinchcombe Chainsaw Training" he is in Usk, S. Wales which is about 15 minutes over the Severn Bridge, he trains a lot of the local Woodland trust volunteers in the area. Or Westonbirt Arboretum in Tetbury used to run them, I am not sure if they still do may be worth a call. Julian

Thank you Julian, I've sent Sam a message via Facebook,

Ask any local tree surgeon, all commercial chainsaw operators need to do a safety course / certificate so they will know where they send their staff

There is a very big difference between professional chainsaw training and what they call domestic user.

The difference is when the training moves onto tree management and climbing. The chainsaw safety course is appropriate to anyone professional or otherwise.

Hello all,
Just incase anyone is interested in a domestic chainsaw course I have found the following,
The problem with many of the courses I came accross was that you had to supply all your own gear and equipment, this one supplies everything,

Hi Dancie,
I can recommend Kingswood Training in the Kent Weald. Their newbie course is excellent but stay overnight, rather than drive up each day if you use them.
A nearer location to you is Merrist Wood College in Guildford. Excellent college and some of our club (Cheam Woodturners) have had chainsaw training from there.

I did a LANTRA approved course quite a few years ago. It was Cross-cutting and maintenance, a very good course. Don’t know if there is still such a course though.

Hello David and Michael,
Many thanks for your imput here,
I've booked a course with Scott Fraser, the one I posted the link to,
I posted the link just in case anyone else was interested,
It took me awhile to find the right course and there are many, some didnt start until after the spring - Premier Inn nearby is only £38 for one night,
All the best.
