Title: Yew hollow form

Apologies for the fuzzy photo. This is a yew vase / hollow form with a hand cast and turned pewter collar and faux tortoise finial, approx 125mm wide x 140mm high overall. I didn't want the natural indents to reak through so it is turned fairly thick inside.

I like these type of pieces and this one is well done.
My preference would have been to turn thinner and open up more holes  - but that's me

Pete,

just in time. I've just come by a good sized Yew branch and was wondering what to make.

Not sure about the pewter though, I have some but have never practised with it.

Ii it turned out half as good as your's I'll post a picture.

Hi Pete,
           I'm with Ken on this one I'm afraid, I would have opened up the holes, but that is down to the choices we make. Nice shape, like the pewter.
Bryan pewter is easy, turn a mold, melt the pewter and pour it in. Make sure the mold is dry and don't allow it to spill on to you. Leave it to cool for 1/2 hour. Drop CA glue around the sides in the mold to stick the pewter in place, mount it on the lathe and turn. You may need to think about sprue holes to allow air to escape from the mold. I turn with a 3/8 spindle gouge quite nicely but others think you should just scrape. try both if I were you.

Thanks guys. nine times out of ten I would have turned the inside thinner so the indents were exposed but decided not to this time. I have a bot more of the log left so maybe the next one LOL.
