Title: Gear Shift
Post by: woodndesign on April 18, 2011, 10:10:31 PM

For as long as we have had our car, I'd wanted to replace the non-standard wooden knob, a burr in line with the walnut burr trim, ok the best I could find was elm..

So..   (http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5110/5632625886_e48314a00e_m.jpg)         How did it come about, the thread was M8, so having trued it all, drilled and tapped, what better drive..   (http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5144/5632040299_f3f16c5a77_m.jpg)     the next..  (http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5261/5632038645_90c05bc47b_m.jpg)    just how deep the the burr...         (http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5110/5632039029_0f4d7fa3d7_m.jpg)     remount the top and shape lower section...   (http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5227/5632624016_e358144151_m.jpg)   (http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5142/5632039733_6fc0779a69_m.jpg)   (http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5108/5632624708_3e2cebe1de_m.jpg)    missing a step or so here..  remount on tap and blend in the top, sand and finish...  (http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5104/5632625488_6fcd6990e8_m.jpg)   the result fitted..   (http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5182/5632071885_555ff6006e_m.jpg)     guess if I find a piece of
walnut, it will be making another..   ;D ...

Nice project. I did the same thing in one of my old skoda cube vans. People used to tease me that the gear shift knob was worth more than the rest of the van. Probably was! I can't put one in the vaux combi because the shaft has a shaped and moulded surround. Maybe I'll do wheel nut covers in burr oak? Stained and textured, of course.

Cheers Andy,  like the idea of the wheel nut covers, may not look right with the alloys or fit the locking nut.

Alloys on the work van? You're confusing me with an Essex woodturner  :-[
