Title: VL100 Lathe
Post by: SMackay on March 02, 2024, 08:03:53 PM
Hi All,

I have the opportunity to buy a VL100 lathe with EVS, does anyone have any opinions on whether this lathe is worth it?

Price would be around £700 and comes with chuck and lots of centres.

My concern is that it will be too low power?

Thanks

The lathe is approx 10" swing so the motor power is about right for what it is.
Looking at what you get for £700 these days, yes I think it's worth it especially if you are getting chucks etc. as part of the package.
My club has one of these and my only complaint is that the cam lock levers on the tailstock and banjo are too short. They need an extended handle to give more leverage to lock tighter.

Totally agree with Paul for £700 with a chuck etc. it is a good deal and a very nice lathe for it's class. Lock levers can be extended.

Only question you need to ask is will it turn the diameter / length you want to spin, and will it fit into your workshop.

I’m not familiar with this lathe so I had to do a search. It appears to be a solid enough lathe but looking at the pictures online there seem to be several different versions? Obviously it also depends on condition.

Is it a older model with a EVS kit or a later model with the EVS as standard

I have the older model with belt speed change , I assume the new one will still have the belt speed change for more torque / speed , Power wise you won't need lots as it's only a small lathe for small projects , Good luck lifting it as it's more than I can lift on my own now I am old  >:(
