Hi there, the only timber I have come across with a pepper type smell is Imbuia.

Hope you were wearing your full respirator gear. Just been reading about Imbuia (Phoebe Porosa), also called Brazilian Walnut. It contains potent alkaloids which are cardiac stimulants and can also cause vomiting, headache and diarrhea. (Selecting and Drying Wood from Best of Fine Woodworking)

Interesting timber to look at but I've never turned it.
The platter is a good shape and well finished but I feel the texture effect is a little weak.
