I use a ring tool for a fair bit of my turning finding it quick, easy and leaving a good finish. Basically it is much the same as the hook tools you see the oriental turners using, just goes all the way around but as yet I have not been able to find anywhere that sells them and I don't have the skill to make my own. Anyone have any suggestions? (sensible ones please LOL)

Have you thought about a local blacksmith to make them

I have but was wondering if they were actually available ready made. I think that they are also used in the scandinavian countries but not here in the UK.

Hook tools are the tool of choice for bowl making on a pole lathe. Ben Orford makes exceptional blades; I can't vouch personally for his hook tools - never used them - but I'll bet they are as good as you'll find. http://benandloisorford.com/store/#!/Greenwood-Tools/c/8817578/offset=0&sort=normal

Pete sometimes there is a blacksmith at Yandles show, I am sure he makes them too.

Nic Westerman is the smith who did Yandles several times but he wasn't there at Spring Show and I have a feeling he won't be there in a couple of weeks (although another lad was there in Spring; don't know him). Nic makes carving knives and axes but he doesn't sell hook tools, although I'm sure he is well capable. He can't make knives fast enough to meet demand and his webstore is usually closed due to excess demand. http://nicwestermann.co.uk/

Bodger's Ask And Answer, site. Lots of bodgers make their own. You could also try Ashley Iles as tony Iles told us on a recent visit, they are the only firm in the country still making specialist tools for green wood turning

Hmm its a shame your not handy with metal. As the hook tools are very simple to make I have made up wards of a dozen or so over the past few years. Not HSS steel but High Carbon which is suitable for soft wood. Although I have one its not used often due to my standard fare is hardwoods, some are darn hard to say the least.

Had a look Paul but they seem to be the swan neck tools which isn't what I was looking for. Wanty I want are the more oriental or bodger style ones like these.

Interesting, wouldnt be too hard for any blacksmith to make this type of tool. What I like about this type is the depth of the steel gives good rigidity when turning.
