Title: Just wanted to share
Post by: David Holden on December 03, 2019, 10:15:30 PM
Hello folks, I just wanted to share the first few things I've turned since starting 2 months ago.

I'm proud of them and absolutely loved making them! Can't wait to make more!

Honey Dipper finished with food safe Danish oil.

I like the fact that you have made the dipper to a different style than normal. Bodes well for future things, look forward to seeing them

Elm bowl with a huge split in that I filled with resin and blue dye.

Beech bowl which I sprayed with a lacquer at the end and I just hated the finish straight away! Ended up putting it back on the lathe, reshaped it, took 4 coats of wax off then waxed it all again. Much happier 2nd time round!

Thanks Pete, not the best finish but was happy with the overall effort.

A good start. Things like tool marks and finishes will improve over time and practice. It is good to see you are prepared to show these startout pieces as hopefully someone can correct any mistakes early in your turning adventure.

Enjoy the turning and may there be further piles of shavings in the workshop

Getting the finish right is just a matter pf practice, having an eye for design is not so common LOL. Talking of which the bowls are all a bit square? Is that deliberate or just the way you did them. Square sided, flat bottoms are far more difficult than rounded ones.

It was deliberate, I love the look of many Dansk bowls and wanted to try my hand at that sort of design.

I think that the most significant statement is that you are "proud of them and absolutely loved making them! Can't wait to make more!"
Keep going and have fun !
