Hello All
Can any woodturning members confirm if a Dakota Precision Scroll Chuck Kit - V5 XT650 from Rutland Tools has a lock grub screw in the chuck to enable it to be be used for reverse turning e.g when sanding
This chuck/package seems very good value but I want to be able to turn both clockwise and anti-clockwise.
Staff at Rutlands were not sure.
Any advice appreciated.

Putting it bluntly, the chuck is a Chinese knock-off of the Vicmark chuck.
And before that sounds bad, I have 2 and don't have a problem with them.

i turn both ways with my axminster chuck and as long as they are tightened i've never had one come off just because i reversed the direction.

I have to say that is a dangerous practice, the day will come when the chuck unwinds and comes off and it will fly around your workshiop like a piece of shrapnel. All it takes is a small grub screw to make it safe.

Funnily enough I found out today where the grub screws are for the Evolution chuck when they both fell out. Not very cleverly placed but good to know they are there.

Graham, hope you found them in the shavings?

As luck would have it I had just done a clear up of the lathe and floor before putting a finish on a small bowl on the lathe. When I took the chuck off afterwards these two screws few out of its innards into my hand. One bounced off onto the floor but was easy to find.

magnet on the end of a stick to get the metal bits that drop off in the shavings :)

not the best of practises i'll admit but it's quite rare that i do it, it's usually to get rid of a stubborn bit of tear out or for sanding, if i were turning loads out i'd go the right way.

Does this chuck have a grub screw for safe reverse turning?
