 6 X 3 bowl blank challenge

I assume this challenge is long gone and dead.
Is anyone interested in a simular challenge.

Yeah, why not. Let's have a little bit of a competition.

Yeah, why not. Let's have a little bit of a competition.
Competitions are great, but only if they commence with a level playing field - or should that be a level lathe bed! However, I firmly believe that competition is unfair when we have beginners, time-served turners and professional turners all using this forum. A simple competition not just favours the professional and/or experienced turner, but also serves to discourage some novice turners from participating when they know that they will be judged alongside the more experienced.
That leaves a choice, either we introduce all manner of different classes, or we go with the original suggestion of a challenge, rather than a competition.

This must be my German background, but can you please explain the difference between a competition and a challenge?

A 'challenge' doesn't have a 'winner'

The challenge was originally made by me but it quickly became apparent that there were not really an adequate number of 'active' members to get involved.

Always worth trying again though if you want  :)

A 'challenge' doesn't have a 'winner'

....and more than that....a competition is adjudicated towards the goal of determining a winner. By simple virtue of the word 'competition', people have to compete against each other, which is why it can be unfair.

A challenge can be much more open and, as Graham says, there doesn't have to be a winner. That doesn't stop us passing comment and critique upon the items submitted for the challenge, so a challenge can promote experiment and learning, without unfair judgement.

If it is simply a case of what can any of us produce from a piece of wood 6 x 3 then it could be interesting as we all thoink along different lines and would produce different ideas. I agree that a 'competition' would need to be organised into different sections to cater for different levels of skill experience etc but, if there are enough to have a go, a challenge as you call it could be a good way of simply seeing what we could all prduce.

OK, got it. Let's have a challenge then. Any rules?

Rules: We have three classes.....novice, intermediate and advanced ;) ..... just kidding!

We have challenges at the club and it's refreshing and inspiring to see the wide range of ideas, particularly if the challenge doesn't have a theme as such, just a starting point.

Just leave the thread open for a while as some may be pressed for time.

Cheers

I think it would be fun - i dont care that i am a newbie as i am sure i can find an interesting bit of wood to take the eye off my turning.  ;) fun is in the taking part.  i dont think you should seperate novice from expert just one comp for all.

So basically the challenge is: take a piece of wood 6" x 6" x 3" thick, any timber, any grain orientation, and make a bowl from it. Any shape, any decorations, anything goes. Right?

Thanks for your response,
I seem to remember that we could make anything from the blank, using only the blank, adhesives and finishes. No added timber or adornments.
The reason I started this post, I was sorting out my home display and came across my original entry.

...who says it has to be a bowl?????

could it be 6" long x 3" for a vase rather than a bowl? how long do we get to make it from the start of the comp?

I was assuming that as a 6x3 bowl blank it would be 6x6x3. I guess if you wanted to make something 6x3x3 instead you could make two of them! Or if you wanted to make something 3x1x1 you could make 36 of them :-) Am I overcomplicating here? ;-)

As if you could  :)
The original challenge was to make something, anything, from a piece of wood 6x6x3, so you are dead right...... But this is a new challenge so the new challenger gets to make the rules.
