I think this is what is known as a bit of a gloat ::)
As mentioned elsewhere, I went to the Axminster shop in Basingstoke yesterday and while there I treated myself to a Jet 3520b lathe. With 10% off plus a free Evolution chuck and jaws it was the equivalent of nearly £500 off. Couldn't resist. They say it takes 2 to 3 weeks for delivery, It's going to be long wait ( for a big weight :) ) Still, it gives me time to reorganise the workshop to accommodate its different working style. :D ;D

Hat's off to you, graham....that sounds like a bargain. I'm not jealous.....I'm not jealous...I'm not jealous....OK, I am just a little bit, in fact, I'm flipping green with envy ;).

just make sure you have a second person there for when you put the headstock on mate. putting the bed and legs together is ok but that headstock almost weighed too much for me, i'm 6'3" and 17stone of muscle so unless you are the same get a second person.
what did you end up paying for the lot?
-
Hi Seventhdevil. £2400 including chuck, jaws, delivery and coffee.
-
good price there mate. i got mine a few years back when they were slightly cheaper but got the 3520b three clubman k100 chuck bodies c jaws and the mega jaws for about £2500.
enjoy it mate it's great toy...
are you going to get the bed extension?
-
Nice one Graham now you won't be able to sleep till it arrives :)
Nothing like a new toy in the workshop :) :) :)

On delivery I was about to say "
it's on a slow boat from China" then it lists In stock and ready for dispatch ... http://www.axminster.co.uk/jet-3520b-heavy-duty-woodturning-lathe (http://www.axminster.co.uk/jet-3520b-heavy-duty-woodturning-lathe) ... good deal you'd had there, not the coffee thrown in free too... :o ..
-
are you going to get the bed extension?
I am not sure yet, I don't intend doing much long spindle stuff so theoretically shouldn't need it but I like hollow forms and MAY get a hollowing rig which MAY need extra bed length.
We will see. One thing at a time
-
Graham,
looks like you stepped in something on the way into the show. Good Score,
Looking forward to you posting items off your new acquisition.
-
It should be able to manage the odd eggcup or two without to much strain. :)

i don't do any long spindle stuff either but the tail stock gets in the way for my money plus the extra length just puts it in to proportion for me.
took a while before i bought it but i wouldn't be without it now mate.
i like turning large bowls so most of the time i have it mounted lower down ready for those whopping great blanks if i can get hold of them...
by the way, it can manage more than an eggcup...
my record at the moment is a 28"x7" walnut that weighed 70kg. it handled it fine...
-
I was thinking Ostrich eggs :)
When turning normal sized bowls with the headstock slid along so yo are turning at the end of the lathe.... doesn't the lower extension get in your way ?
-
not really. i've not got a free standing tool rest so you need the extension to put the banjo on. most of the time because of the diameter of the large bowl you're turning far away from the bed rather than the center of a bowl so the extension is not impeding your stance.
when turning a normal bowl i tend not to slide the headstock along but do it the other end over the bed. this is probably because at a moments notice ill need to use it for turning skittles so need to keep it ready.
-
She's a beaut Graham and by the sounds of it you got one hell of a great deal.
-
Yep, Still smirking ;D Just waiting for a delivery date.
-
Gloat away - I promise not to get too jealous.
Piccies and a write up when it arrives I hope.
-
Of course. I have to prove it exists don't I. :)
-
you need a photo as proof, that`s what they told me when I got my 3520B,what was it they said,oh yes,it doesn`t exist until you have photo proof,I had the last laugh, put a photo straight on here,I hope you get as much enjoyment from your new 3520B when it arrives as I have in the last 2 yrs with mine, cheers,
Eric.
-
Thank you Eric.
-
Ah.. Now when it arrives you'll then have to explain away, no one has anything for Christmas .. maybe not even next year nor foreseeable birthdays ... :o ..
-
One has to get ones priorities right :)

Pics or it didn't happen. lol
That was standard response in Uni whenever anyone bought new software or finished their games. Nice to see it still being used.
How is the wait treating you? I'm normally jumping at every van that drives past the house when I'm expecting something in the post.

that headstock weighs a bit doesn't it. i can only just lift it...
lets see the pics
-
Indeed it does and I didn't fancy taking that of the bed and then trying to get it back on single handed, its to unwieldily.
So I assembled it with the headstock on and ALMOST managed it by myself ( I wouldn't recommend doing it like this but it worked )
I just turned the lathe round on the pallet and then kept sliding the headstock along to the opposite end while I lifted one end and slid a block under. I got the first couple in by myself then needed SWMBO to slide the blocks under while I lifted each end alternately until it was high enough to get the legs under and bolt on.
Hairy, but good fun looking back on it.
-
Nice machine and nice solution to getting the legs on looks like a pig of a job.
-
Next step - add Wood!
-
Add wood ?
What, and make it mucky ?
Nah, it took me ages to clean the gunk off it. :)
-
Now you're never leave your workshop :)
-
He DID ... He DID ... Said He HAD .. :o ...
Very next thing .. to get it off the blocks and to its final location .. or just left inside the door .. ;D
Looks good, have fun.
Cheers David
-
:)
Nope, it was in position ready to use by the time I crawled back to the house :)
-
don't remember mine ever being that clean...
-
Does look rather nice Graham, nice clean workshop a well ! :-\
-
Clean lathe and clean workshop. You just know its not going to last don't you.
