Title: Coloured Burr Lime Vase
Post by: Frans Brown on July 08, 2012, 01:19:54 PM
I thought as I've had the cheek to comment on some of your pieces, I should at least put one of mine up for critique.
This is a heavily burred piece of burr lime approx. 7"x7" finished with WOP and Chestnut stains.
It was today presented to a woodturning friend as part of a swap of work.

All comments welcomed.

Hi Frans
This is one lovely piece of work. You appear to have used the stains very sparingly so none of the beauty of the wood is lost. Wouldn't mind receiving this myself. Nice work.

Frans, is this from the same tree as the piece you had pictured in woodturning (oh maybe 18 months ago), you'll know the one I mean.

What a fantastic piece, you've certainly use stains sympathetically, It sort of reminds me of a Ewer but adding a handle would definitely not work.

Thanks for commenting. You have all given positive comments, for which of course I am grateful, but should you ever feel the need to point out what in your opinion might improve a piece I am equally pleased ( well nearly).

dr4g0nfly, You are right on the money. I was fortunate enough to get quite a fair bit of this burry lime, and have been working my though it for some time. The problem now is that it is very dry, and comes off the tools like shrapnel.

Regards the colouring, I always dilute the stain by at least 50% often going as far as 90%, as I like the effect this has enabling the final colour to built up using additional colours.

Frans I am not really into coloured wood Burr or not. But this could easily change my mind, the subtle use of colour here has definitely outlined the qualities of the burr. Well done! Look forward to seeing more of this.

Hi Frans, What do you use to dilute your Spirit Stains? Regards John

Hughie, glad you liked the more subtle use of colouring. I'm sure if you give it a try you will be hooked.

John, for thinning the colour I use cellulose thinners as they dry quickly and don't effect the colour. I have found quality automotive thinners to be the best buy, at around £15 for 5 litres.

David, guilty as charged.
In my defence: a/ I did'nt realise what I was doing. b/ I did'nt mean to do it c/I was made to do it.
