Not used it but https://www.hampshiresheen.com/shop/pro-clear-gloss-lacquer-spray-400ml/ (https://www.hampshiresheen.com/shop/pro-clear-gloss-lacquer-spray-400ml/) is said to be a higher build than most can lacquers

A friend used some clear gloss lacquer from Aldi and the finished piece looked good to me. Cheap enough to experiment with as well. Just a thought.

I use Tetrosyl lacquer from Amazon https://amzn.eu/d/3QrOQPZ it is less than £4 a can and gives excellent results.

Similar, I have used clear acrylic spray from Toolstation and Halfords, inexpensive and works. Can't really tell the different brands apart. Thin layers, 20 minutes between each, de nib after the first. Let it fully harden for a few days before full-on use. I've also used Plasti Kote Matt to good effect (Toolstation), and Plasti Coat clear sealer which is higher build - takes a bit longer between coats but gives a very deep shiny finish, bit 'artificial' for my taste but it has its place.
Of passing interest, my spray booth. Masking tape on end of chuck, clamp shoebox into place which keeps the spray in and dust off. I find running at about 250 whie you 'puff' the spray can and then running up to a higher speed for a minute avoids any runs, go get a coffee then come back and repeat.

I have used Aldi Hi Gloss Lacquer with good effect.

Aldi and Lidl spray paints are a bargain in my view. Only problem is there is a limited range and they are not sold all year round. I buy them when I see them if I think I’ll use them at some point. Same with their universal thinners.

Many thanks to you all.
A lot of good advice to follow up on, including Richards shoebox spray booth, an excellent idea.

Sorry for the late reply on this. I use Halfords Universal Laquer. Works like a dream.

I have recently bought some spray paints from Toolstation that are proving to be excellent. The brand is Pro-Cote. Highly recommended and a good price. £6.15 for a 500ml can. You can pay £12 to £14 or more for only a 400ml can in other places. The Pro-Cote Matt Black is also very good, probably the best I’ve ever used.

Do you mean varnish or lacquer?

The OP did indeed say spray varnish but I assumed me meant Lacquer? Varnish is traditionally applied from a tin with a paint brush. What says the OP? ;D
