That's one heck of a grain pattern for mahogany Woody. Better than anything i have ever found. Even the Spanish mahogany I have isn't that dramatic. Lovely clean platters mind, can't imagine them not selling.

Mahogany usually has a distinctive spicy smell when cut. One of my fondest memories of turning at school is the smell LOL.

£ square platters ...   ;D ..  Oh whot little beauties ..  so simple in form & finish, could you have sapeli, have worked with it as commercial body flooring, not turned it to know if it would look like these...   :-[ ...

More little flyers, as all your work.

Hi Dave I find Sapeli is normally a lot darker than these

Flame Cut is just where the timber is cut (normally as a veneer) across a stressed crotch to give the grain and ripple effect.

Woody, we've discussed Mahogany before, did it create a load of dust like the stuff does? I certainly looks like one of the Mahogany's in colour and grain as best as the picture reveals.

Did you tinge (Heat dip in hot sand - or some-such) the corners of one of the platters in some way, they appear darker than the core wood?

No treatment on the wood I think it is just poor lighting I was sure it was Mahogany in the rough before I turned and it did turn just like mahogany the only thing that made me think it may not be is the grain pattern

Hi woody,
like everyone else I think these are lovely. As to the wood I too think it is Sapele, the only reason some do not see it as such is because in this country it is normally used in joinery/furniture making and the cut is not the best. Guys just think of what quarter sawn oak looks like compared to slab sawn or whatever and then think what Sapele would look like quarter sawn. I think it is just an interesting cut of wood.

Very nice wood
the wood also could be mistaken for red elm
