Spindle thread adapter
« on: January 29, 2020, 06:09:09 PM »
Hi all,

I am new to this forum so please be gentle.

I have just bought a Coronet Herald lathe, very pleased so far. I have an old Nova chuck which I'm told has an 1 1/8 inch 8 tpi thread. Does anyone know where I can get a spindle thread adapter from the record M33 (female) to 1 1/8 inch 8 tpi?

Thanks for any helpful suggestions

John

If your Nova Chuck has a removable threaded insert then the Chuck itself might be a M33 thread?

Hi John

If you google "nova chuck spindle adaptors" you'll find many companies that stock adaptors.  You can choose which to go for on price, location or whatever.

I clicked on this link which might be helpful for you?

Try the Toolpost in Didcot.

Hi John

I jumped the gun with my previous response.  If you haven't already seen it, have a look through this link, I think it has some useful info for you.

Having read through some of the pages in this link then as a first step, I suggest you confirm what chuck and what thread you have -

Hope this is helpful this time.

Look on the Charnwood website. They list dozens of different orientations under headstock thread adaptors.

I know you have already said it... but treble check your chuck, it must be very old to have the 1 1/8th as standard, and going from that to M33 would require an exhert not in insert which moves the weight of chuck and load out away from the bearing, which while tolerable is not ideal.

As far as I am aware Nova chucks have been either 1 1/4 or  M33 for at least 20  and probably 30 years.

Hi John

If your Nova is the standard chuck thread that takes an a thread adaptor then you will just by a M33 x 3.5 excert Nova or Sorby will fit. If not I think that you will find that you will need to have something made.

There's a guy on here Ian Parkin who makes adaptors.

All the best

Hi John,

The first chuck I bought, some years ago, was a Nova.  Using the link from my last post, I've confirmed it's a supernova (chrome body).  Is yours the same as in the images?  The Nova table lists the thread as M38 x 1.5.

As Ed says, you should simply need an adapter as in the image, which I use for my M33 x 3.5 spindle threads on my lathe.  It's definitely quite large and chunky but I don't suffer from vibration.

I tried taking photos as I thought it was 1 1/2" x 8 tpi (images aren't too successful as I needed more than two hands!)  but given the table I guess it's the metric M38 x 3.5. thread.

I can take metric measurements if you wish - let me know.

Hi Sandy,

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to research my Nova chuck, unfortunately my Nova chuck is the original Nova scroll chuck which superseded the Nova insert chuck.

Many thanks

John

Hi John,

I din't realise you knew which model you had.  Again, as Ed said, getting an insert shouldn't be difficult, especially if you can take your chuck to a store / send an image.

From what I've read the
>  G3 scroll chuck (Chuck key to tighten / loosen jaws) has a M38 x 3.5 thread
>  G3 scroll chuck D reversible (Chuck key to tighten / loosen jaws) has a 1" 8TPI RH thread
>  Precision Midi scroll chuck (two bars to tighten / loosen jaws)  has a 1" 8TPI RH thread

Good luck.
