Coloured and Textured Ash Bowl
« on: November 06, 2018, 08:42:26 PM »
Hi all

After spending one day at this year's seminar, I was fired with increased enthusiasm (and determined to go to the whole of the next seminar if possible!). Here's my latest turning - a coloured and textured ash bowl. Still deciding what to do with the foot...

cc welcome

Hi Stewart and welcome to the forum.
What a cracking first post. The contrast between textured, smooth, coloured and natural works well. There's lots going on, but not too much....good balance.

Hi Stewart,

Welcome to the forum and I'll start by saying it's a shame this was not shown in the seminar instant gallery as I'd love to have a closer look at the unusual coloured effect you've created in the textured area.

Canted over like that is a different way to photographing a bowl especially as I can see it does have a foot, it adds interest and the ability to see inside without looking down at it, a clever idea.

Any chance of some further details of the dimensions.

See you found your way here as well Stewart. ;D ;D ;D

As I stated elsewhere colours work well together and nice to see some wood left natural

Thanks for the appreciative comments!
Dimensions - roughly 6 3/4 inches wide and nearly 4 inches high. I have a video of how it was made, showing the texturing and colouring. Not sure if I can post a link in the forum, but search for Stewart Furini Woodturning on YouTube and you should find it!

Hello Stewart,
Yes, worth doing the whole of a seminar but it is hard work !! Interesting piece which you have posted to the gallery, I like this more than the regular platters, maybe because it is a bowl ? There is a lovely crisp edge to the piece delineating the colour and texture from the natural grain. I like the treatment of the top edge, leading the eye to the inside of the bowl and an inner edge for the grain pattern to fold over. Good, even texturing with the gilt (?) inside and a complimentary colour to the outside. Square off the foot and leave it natural grain unless the colour has penetrated too far. If it has, square off the foot and use a colour to match the inside of the texturing or the dark of the outer rim.

Thanks, John - your keen eye for detailed comment is much appreciated. Yep, the foot needs attention. Will sort it out this weekend!

Stewart,

Thank you for the pointer to your YouTube channel.

I've now watched you make this bowl and will now admit that I thought the gold in the textured area had been achieved using a technique I use occasionally - nail varnish.
