Not a plank of Teak
« on: August 15, 2018, 08:04:54 PM »
I needed a plank to teak for a commission I'm working on. I know there are some down at the wood recycling centre, from the old Weston-super-Mare pier which burnt down.

So off I toddle and see one that looks almost new, no cracks or damage from sun, sea or sand. 2.5m x 40mm x 115mm, it's mine for £10.

So I get it home and start to cut a few bits for the job, it smells funny, it tough os old (army) boots, and completely too dark to be teak. I also notice that it was extremely heavy.

So I pull out a couple of squares I bought at Yandles during my last visit, it's not teak, it's Leadwood, a huge plank for just £10.

2 questions, what do I do with it and should I go back for more tomorrow?

not a plank of leadwood either. leadwood is a small tree and is not exported for the building of piers.

pics would help bryan.

my guess is that it could be any of the common timbers found in piers which include but are not restricted to,

Greenheart, Chlorocardium rodiei
Okan, Cylicodiscus gabunensis
Jarrah, Eucalyptus marginata
Ekki, Lophira alata
Cumaru, Dipteryx odorata
Ipe, Handroanthus spp
Massaranduba, Manilkara bidentata
Opepe, Nauclea diderrichii
Purpleheart, Peltogyne spp
Jatoba, Hymenaea spp
Mora, Mora spp

how heavy is it bryan?

I think you ought to give me the address of the recycling centre and I can meet you there.

John,
it's the same one that sold me a huge bit of Jarra for £20.

Oh yes.

It's sort of an open grain, not unlike Wenge.

I got some stuff of off Brighton Pier and that was keruing. Very heavy, quite brittle and prone to checks.

I have some greenheart that came from a pier in wales. It sounds just like your wood.

Does it look anything like the seats in the half track I made. If so that is Panga Panga.
