Wellingtonia/Sequoia bowl
« on: July 23, 2018, 08:00:06 PM »
This was cut from a nodule at the base of the trunk of a Wellingtonia (aka sequoia) in the grounds of a large country house. The workshop held onto a lovely, heady smell for days afterwards. There's numerous little patches of crystalised resin in the old resin canals and the finished surface of the bowl was quite waxy (as discussed earlier) so it was washed repeatedly with cellulose thinners, which seemed to do the trick. I'm going to settle for quite a low finish on this, just enough BLO to give a satin finish.
The size is 15" x 5".
C&C always welcome...Les

Lovely colour and grain in this one Les worth all the effort of cleaning to be able to apply the finish

Super shape which allows the timber to speak. Simple lines and no fuss, quite difficult to achieve. I particularly like the detailing of the rim, leaving it perpendicular to the start of the curve of the bowl. I also favour a non shiny finish, again leaving the grain to speak.
