Ash bowl
« on: April 19, 2018, 06:43:27 PM »
Getting ready to do a turning demo and was going to take the rough turned piece to work on so in preparation I started by returning the tenon and just take enough off to take out any wobble but found that it was tearing out something terrible so decided to complete it and find another one to take. I used cellulose sander sealer to help with the tear out, after applying and fine cuts repeated was able to get a good finish.
Wood is Ash and is 7" X 1 1/2" there is so much going on in the grain from spalting to some ripple. The finish was kept simple Chestnut Sander sealer and Woodwax22

A well chosen piece of wood, well turned and well finished.....can't go wrong with that!
Les
Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

There is certainly a lot of something going on in that bowl.

My first thought was it looks like you got a piece of wood from well down the trunk, but the grain structure says no to that, it's more like a branch intersection that was affected by something, rot or fungus.

Thank you Les, Nick and Bryan.

Not sure where in the tree it was but suspect the same as you I got this in a mixed lot of logs which had been taken down for a while and had rough turned it
