Resin Ghosts & Flames
« on: January 28, 2018, 12:42:05 PM »

The large ones are 5" Polyester  Resin....... The Small ones are 3"  Polyurethane Resin   They have been hollowed out
to 1/4" to keep the density of the colour ..... At the moment they have all been Turned, Sanded and polished with
Yorkshire Grit..... I will leave them for a month before Buffing in case of any movement. Turned By Me colour and mixed
  by Di
  Comments as always Welcome
  Kind Regards Tony

What is not to like about them especially the one on the right in the second photo.

The only one I have reservations on is the other in that photo where you have the sudden change of colour around the rim compared to the other one where the blue blends into the rest of the resin.

These must be so much fun to handle and to see the way that light plays on them when they moved. I like them all and really couldn't choose between them.

Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

Thank You George ..... Thank You Les ... your right depending on the light different colours and depth of colours will
   change .

Thank You Derek.... With Polyester you have 30 to 60 minutes depending on conditions .. with polyurethane you have
just a few minutes .... After taking out a good 1/8" for the lid and taking into account that the wood lines up
any fade in was taken away by the lid join .... will mix it better next time ;D ;D ;D ;D
   Kind Regards Tony

Or make the fade lower down ;)  ;D

Know the problems of setting times as I do occasionally cast my own blanks mainly for pens.

Looking Good :) Tony & Di The resin really adds something.

How do you cut them? I've been given a commission the guy sent me a blank and asked for a sphere. I was killing all my tools so had to resort to a carbide scraper.

All the best

I use all tools Ed..... and you need to keep them very sharp and sharpen often. Also when turning
go  very gently .... Hope that helps

Cheers

For these Stuart you need vacuum and pressure ...... But as said
before on another post , to make hybrid blanks
will cost well over £1.000 with the hardware and resin even with that it does not mean you will be successful..i have found
you  cannot skimp or cut corners ..... My advice would be to go on George Watkins site and treat yourself to a couple of
ready made blanks ..... to warrant the high expenditure you need a world wide market and a lot of good luck .

Thanks Tony

Trust me when i say my tools were sharp, but they were done in one pass on a 4" blank.

The carbide sorted it out  ;D ;D ;D

All the best
