Cake stand
« on: January 25, 2018, 12:39:59 PM »
I have to do a Demo in our http://www.burnham-on-sea-wtc.co.uk/ next Tuesday. I had no idea what I was going to demo until I saw The raised platter that Fuzzy made so this morning I made my version to see if I could make one in the time.I kept it quite simple because if I made it too complicated I would run out of time. This one is made from Beech apart from the pedestal that is Sycamore because I never had any suitable Beech.
This one took me exactly two hours inc lacquering and polishing.
For the Demo I will leave out the laquering and polishing and try not to talk too much.

Looks a but chunky to me too. It needs to be useful though does't it? Usually cake stands have a ring on the top. Make the process a bit longer in making though unless you pre do the ring for the demo. Make the ring seperately, drill a 10mm hole into the side and a 10mm tenon on the finial part.  Just a thought

George, I would agree, the individual bits don't sit well together. Having said that, it's quite tricky to put the finger exactly on what would make it better.
Personally, I think the foot is too big. OTOH, it needs to be a certain size, otherwise the whole things topples over too easily. I also think there's too much flow in all of the lines. I think it would be better if the main cove ended in a sharp edge at its lower end.

This is made very quickly just as something for a club Demo. It has a bit of crossgrain and a bit of spindle as most of our Members are novices I try and keep things simple to give them ideas. After club night it will be dumped as it is not good enough to sell.

I'm sure it will make a good demo George  :)

It will give them something to go home and try.

All the best

George,

I've apologiesd for not being able to be there on the night.

Now recognising that this was a practice run, I'm not sure about the spindle, the curves are a bit wishy washy, it lacks definition as there are no breakpoints (fillets) in the curves.
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

George,

I don't have a problem with it, we see stand like these everywhere, in glass, metal and ceramic the loose curves work, but in turnings a degree of definition makes all the difference to the apparent elegance of the piece.
