Sycamore vase
« on: June 25, 2017, 10:07:20 AM »
Some friends called me up a couple of months ago - they had just taken down a rather large sycamore and wondered if I'd like a chunk  ::)

This was a piece from near the centre (the cookie was about 40" diameter and between 12" & 16" thick).  It's ended up at 10" tall, 6" at the widest.

Nice wood.
Is this Vase waterproof.
Stability might be a issue if it is filled with flowers

It should be waterproof.....I've given the inside a generous coating of hardwax so we'll see once it's dried.

Stability - yes, it can be an issue with this style.  I've left some weight in the bottom to counter that.  With some water in as well it should be fine.

Like the shape and the wood of this. What do you mean by 'hard wax' Chris? Is that something that ylou have used before for waterproofing?

Me tight? What makes you say that George LOL. I actually have some of the Treatex Hard Wax Oil, though admit it was a sample I was given. Haven't used t yet though.

It is indeed the treatex hardwax oil that I use.  I've found it to be very effective at sealing even the most open grained woods.

Chris,

lovely markings on this vase and not overworked on the shape, I like it.

Pete,

I thought you used the 2 part (Colron?) floor sealer to waterproof your goblets.

I do Bryan, I have a small bottle of the oil that I was sent as a sample which I have yet to try. Not sure if it would be resistant to alchohol as some of the things i have truied in the past weren't, waterproof yes, alcholo proof no. Might experiment with this one now though.
