Looking at this I think the dark outside and the gold inside looks best, but it looks quite messy around the walls of each of the piercings

I think that if this was mine I would sand all the piercing holes smooth and see if the contrast of the wood against the colours look ok, if not then I would paint the openings by hand with the inside colour.

Ed think this form now has had enough colour that it has given it its own texture so no need to worry about that but will take your advice and try and sand down the piercings and then paint by hand so will get back with this when finished.
