inspired by ED
« on: April 26, 2017, 01:39:30 PM »
well I had a go at one of Ed oliver's pierced hollow forms. I hope I did good. it took me a few nights to complete it is from green timber with a moisture content of about 40%. it is turned to a wall thickness of about 5mm. the size is 6x4 and is ebonised and lacquered. all comments welcome.

I think you've done well. The piercing looks random, none too big or too small but what sort of tool do you have to go through 5mm of timber so cleanly?

I used the variable speed dremel that goes from 10,000 to 30,000 rpm.

This one in my opinion is not as delicate as the one Ed made.
If something is made very well by somebody it is in my opinion a mistake to try and copy it as you will very rarely get as good a result.

thank you for the comments George. I wasn't trying to reproduce the same as ED but to have a go at something similar. it was more the trying of the piercing work I wanted to have a go at as I have never don anything on this scale before.

The danger of copying someone is that your piece will invariably be compared to theirs and it is rare that anything copied comes up to the original.
You would have been better making it a completely different shape to the one Ed made maybe a wide rimmed bowl with a pierced rim or a thin walled bowl with piercings.

looking good to me for a first go. I am a long way off anything like this. I would like to see a finish on the inside as well maybe a contrasting colour.
never try to be better than others just better than you were yesterday.

thank you for your comments. I am considering putting a black  ebonised spray on the inside.

Or wrap it in Clingfilm and spray it gold inside.

I think it would look good and it will also colour all the edges if you wrap it tight I look forward to seeing the result.
If it looks crap you can always blame me I am pretty thick skinned

I don't think there is a big enough contrast between the inside and the outside it might worth trying a sponge effect with black gloss on the outside.
Black and gold always work

George I was in the same mind as you not fully liking the painted iridescent one have gone back to the black as you suggested and like it better.
