Small Apple Hollowform
« on: March 08, 2017, 09:06:01 PM »
I've had a chance to play lately, well at least make a few things I've been wanting to have a go at. Here is a small Apple Hollowform.

I was given a small apple trunk from a lady at work and this is the first bit I've made with it. Dimensions are 90mm wide x 85mm tall. Finished by buffing and 2 coats of Renaissance Wax.

Mounted on a scorched board (with big knot) and two seashells (well I do live near the seaside!

C&C as you will, thanks for looking.

A good little hollow form with a great finish, which sits in excellent contrast to the texture of the shells. The only element that I'm not fussed about, is the scorched plinth....perhaps it's just the picture quality, but it looks a bit coarse.

I like the overall effect Brian but try  moving the shells further apart. They look like one piece or perhaps kit's just the angle of the photo.

I love it. I can now see what level  I have to get to with my forms.

Thank you gents. I must apologise about the photos, I got my DSLR out, only to find I'd left it turned on and the battery was flat, these are from my camera phone.

Les,
I can see what you mean, although I did deliberately over-burn the knot area just to give it added texture, maybe a little too much.

Pete,
The turning is easy but I don't have your touch for composition, so thanks for the suggestion.

Wider,
I don't think you're far off, just concentrate on the flow of the curve.

Nice Hollow Form.
I think the plinth is too heavily scorched and the form would look better moved to the top right hand corner and one shell only bottom left hand corner.

Hello Bryan, very nice lump of wood - I feel that it doesn't need the plinth and it definitely doesn't need the shells, if anything they distract. And all composition depends on the final angle that the object will be viewed from. All the best

Bryan The plinth  from here  looks too much like a plinth for a model ship or similar. Perhaps you could re shape or
burn it down so there is no vestige of the bevel or square shape and has George says re position the elements.
  Kind Regards Tony d

Hummm, it looks like the base/plinth is not working. I might have to rethink it in light of some of the suggestions.

Thank you all for your comments and ideas, they are all gratefully received.

I have had a few psychedelic things turned in green apple. It can warp a lot, especially old orchard wood that has been bent and twisted over the years.
