spalted silver birch vase
« on: June 12, 2016, 09:50:26 PM »
last Wednesday I was given a lump of spalted silver birch so set to and turned over a few nights so as to let it dry out slowly here is the finished item. it was a challenge as it was soft as in areas and dug in easily. all comments welcome.

Hi Dennis....birch can be a bit soft at the best of times and when spalted it can go from being sound to being mush in a very short space of time....looks like you got this piece at just the right time and you seem to have got a good finish for a soft piece of timber.

thank you Les
it was really soft in places. not a very good finish on the inside as I haven't got means of getting my hand in or using a sanding stick.

We'd never have known Dennis!!

A nice piece from what can be a problematic wood.
Cheers

There is some really clean spalting on this vase with very high definition Dennis....... well done on what can be a difficult
       wood to work with.

I've turned a bit of spalted birch in the past, I love the smeary spalt lines as opposed to the definite ones you get in beech.

And as noted before, you've done well, it is a soft wood that can take good tooling to finish well.

Great job Dennis. Nice shape and agree that you did a great job considering the state of the wood

thank you to all that have commented on this vase. I have had it on the stall for just under 30 min's and it was snapped up so happy days.
