I just had another look at this one, George, and I really like it, especially the texture on the rim - the scorching has highlighted the medullas very nicely.

Thank you all for your comments they are very much appreciated.

It does not look like I am going to get any peace until I tell you how I do this
I have not said because I consider it to be very very risky
I use a mini grinder with a 3" chainsaw disc I wear a steel butchers glove on both hands and wrists and welding gloves over them.
It is all done free hand.
I do not recommend doing this as it could possibly be dangerous

I have one of these and found it to be a bit hectic for me :)
But the oak bowl/s are great, the texture and pattern really works well. I think your onto a real winner here.

the best bit for me is the rim, it's not charred or ebonised but not left plain, the slight colouring effect to bring out the grain brings the whole thing alive.
