Latest piece
« on: May 14, 2016, 10:07:18 AM »
Latest piece. This is one that was made ages ago and has been hanging about waiting for inspiration. Laburnum box with ebonised lid with a lampwork bead. On an ebonised base with a little copper piece for adornment. Stands 190mm tall. C&C welcome

Pete

Hi Pete I think a simple lid would work better

That's what I had on it originally George but it looked something and nothing. We'll see what Joe public thinks LOL.

 Hi Pete,
I have to agree with George on this one I think IMHO it either needs a lid or a much slimmer/Finer Finial.

I forgot to say I love the Laburnum Box

Um, the 'finial' is the lid John. Just not a straight forward knob one. Have a look at the third image.

I don't make many lidded pieces, so I'm not the best judge, but I wonder if it would help if you were to draw the profile of this piece on paper, then draw a 'fair' curve running from the line of the vessel, through its top corner to the tip of the finial, and then have cut the finial such that the various rings 'touched' that curve. Maybe, just maybe, that continuation of the curve would have been more harmonious.

That would involve drawing Les! Seriously it is an idea worth looking into though in real life the flow does seem to work. I took a dozen photos trying to get a good picture showing it at it's best as it is a complex shape overall but every angle looks different so perhaps haven't shown it at it's best?

I'm with you on that one Pete...I photographed a 3-legged Christening stool yesterday to send the image to a customer who commissioned it via the internet....Despite there being a 10degree rake on the legs, most of the images made them look square to the seat.

I keep looking at this piece Pete and I'm not a fan of the lid on this piece.

I think that the base of the lid looks a bit thick so the ebonising highlights the end grain which causes my eye to go straight to that point.

But that not to say for a second that the buying public wouldn't love it.

The hollow form and display look great.

All the best

Ed

Strange, I really like the lid.

It's sat on a simple form so the strength of the shape works for me. It's also happily balanced in its stepped and inverted curved shape. I also like the use of the glass bead, I've used them before and think they work well in a finial.
