Hinged box lids.
« on: February 18, 2016, 08:13:17 AM »
I know I've asked this before, but I'm hoping that some of the new members might have an answer. Where can I buy hinged box lids that are not the garishly decorated gold ones that Axminster sell. I've recently bought a few lots off ebay and have had some bronze ones (much more subtle) and plain gold plated, but neither seller knew where they'd come from.

Not sure what size you are after, but you could try www.originalmarquetry.co.uk or www.jewelleryboxhardware.com. Malcolm.

Thanks Julian and Malcy...interesting links, but none of them stock what I'm after.

What I'm looking for is the type that has two circular rings, mounted on top of each other, with a hings at the back and a catch at the front. I've seen several different patterns and have three patterns in stock, but I'd like to buy more and the only ones that I can currently source is the type stocked by Axminster (and others) which look a bit 'brassy' and garish.

ones like this?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-X-hinged-round-brass-bezels-suitable-for-boxes-/262290405400?hash=item3d11b9f818:g:EWoAAOSwEeFU8HJl
....very much like that, thanks Steve. It's a shame that these are quite small, at about 40mm. Ockenden Timber used to sell a 50mm version of this, but no longer stock it.

Yep, I'd be interested in a few myself, it it helps. But let's not do the heart shaped ones, they are too tricky to turn for my taste.

Dead-end, I'm afraid. I used Hodder's link and put in an enquiry, which meant registering with 'Cantonfair', which seems to be some sort of agency representing numerous manufacturers. Whilst I've not had a reply from the manufacturer of the box-lid hinges, I am now being inundated with offers of all sorts of eastern products.

Hi Les

have you research Alibaba.com which is the Chinese version of Ebay. I have a friend that buys quite a bit of woodturning sundries such as this for woodturning and gets it at a fraction of the cost. The only issue though is that you have to buy on occasions hundred of the same thing, but if it is for a run of work it is well worth it.

I found these Round box hinge They are about 40p each but you have to buy 200

Cheers Mark, and thanks for that. I'll give it a try.
Les

2 mins later.....I just checked out that lead and it's the same business that Hodder gave me the link to, but via Alibaba rather than via an agent. Fingers crossed!
