« on: January 25, 2016, 10:27:33 PM »
last little bit of burr elm. so I had to see what I wanted so a trinket box it was. it is just a simple shape but had to leave the top alone. all comments welcome.

Dennis,

I think you were right to leave this box a simple as you have. The Burr speaks for itself and the raw edge of the burr adds plenty of interest to it both in texture and (I'll not use shape) movement.

Unusual and effective use of a bit of burr. Looks very different to the normal boxes we see and better for that.

thank you Peter for your comments.
a friend commented on the joint being a bit in your face and that he would embellish it by adding other lines in it so here is the adapted box.what do you think.

In the very first photograph it struck me that joint line was very clean, so I'm not so sure that it needed the scorch-lines but they're there now, and they work ok. I bet it was a bit tricky reversing the lid to clean off the underside!

hi Les
the under side of the lid was hand sanded but that was it. couldn't think of a way of cleaning it any other way.

Really like this, the only thing I would change is to make the lid the female fitting so when removed and put down on the table there is no edge to get damaged.

Cheers Martin.

....that's absolutely fine as I'm sure you couldn't have hollowed the lid very much, anyway, but if I'm faced with needed to clean-off or even hollow a piece like this, I use a compression chuck (some people call them spring-chucks). I make one every now and again to fit whatever job is in hand, and I now have several that I can call on when I need one.

The traditional versions of these are tapered on the outside and have a ring which is jammed up to compress instead of the jubilee clip. Think some japanese turners still use them.
