Yandles Trip
« on: September 17, 2015, 08:04:06 PM »

As always at Yandles Show Diane Treats me to some expensive wood, looking at the Masur Birch it all had large cracks except one
piece which has been there for 3yrs I know of it had 2 large areas of rot also woodworm, took a chance thought it might be
interesting inside. I was governed by what I could make in the end I got a conical bowl, a h/f from the bowl save (Red WIP ) 2 boxes
and 14 1/2 pens. The smaller masur birch was all cracked at one end so cut 1 3/ 4" of the end which gave me 23 1/2 pen  blanks
from the rest I made a jewellery box. Looking at the ash blanks store there was a lot of small blanks , I made a small bowl and one
from the bowl save..... The large birch £36.... small birch £19 and £3.50 for the ash all minus 15%

What a cracking batch of pieces this is. As ever, a beautiful finish and those little multiple-boxes are superb (how do you do the ebonising in them?)

Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

It was done with a Guitar String in 2 grooves  before parting off with a very fine parting tool.

Ah...my mistake then...I thought that the horizontal part of the rim was also black, but clearly not.

Sorry les ....misunderstood..... what you can see is a light colour wash both inside and out..... but sanded off on the outside
to show the grain...... Looking forward to seeing your next post  :)

Can't beat masur birch for texture. I especially like the red hollow form. The combination of colour with natural texture is just brilliant. And the courage it would have taken to put colour to this already magnificent piece of wood (and turning)!

Thanks Wolfgang ....... The Red one is still being worked on and as you know we take a lot of chances.
Masur Birch is certainly a wood that's interesting to turn..... especially the first group with all the rot and disturbance.

Thanks Eric .... Always try and get my money`s  worth out of everything ;D ;D

    Thank Both
