African Shield
« on: August 31, 2015, 08:10:53 PM »
Over the years most of my work has been coloured partly or completely.
I have had for many years an interest in the colours of Africa but never really saw a way of introducing them into my work until recently.
I was not at all satisfied with the last bowl I made so I took it apart and gave some thought about what I could use the bits for and this is the result.
The colours and pattern are meant to be quite subtle so I used red as a base colour than added the pattern in purple and sprays a very thin black over the whole thing
It is 16" high the base is stained Oak

George,

Of course it's a cut and reformed bowl, but again you've seen it as something else and very different.

Love this new direction - eh, can you paint a zebra skin design on it from your art classes? (just kidding)
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

Very clever, George, to reform your bowl into something completely different. The added 'spear' identifies the piece as an African shield. Well thought through and well done. Malcolm.

Thank you John and Ed. I am pleased you like it.
You are right Ed usually if something goes wrong or I don't like the log burner is where it ends up but this time I thought there must be something I can do with it and I am so pleased with the result I am going to do more.

Nice one George there is so much out there that we can include in our work it is limitless.

For me I would centralise the shield on the base and attach the spear to the shield itself, or you could mount it on a backing of scorched oak and hang it on the wall. Lots of possibilities there.

I like the subtle use of colour also.
