Not so long back I had a 22" platter on a vacuum chuck when there was a power cut. Fortunately, my system holds the vacuum for long enough to allow the lathe to stop so I grabbed the platter when it came to a halt and breathed a big sigh of relief! I don't have a vacuum reservoir but when I put my system together, I found that making sure all the joints didn't leak (lots of ptfe tape!) made a big difference to how long the vacuum held after power loss.

On the problem with tripping electrics, maybe you should look into changing the breaker for one with a higher rating? Or have you already done that?

Hi Paul

Yes I have considered a less sensitive breaker but it happens so infrequently it is not normally a problem.
Mark Sanger told me you can get a non return valve to inc in the system so I will look in to it.

George

Just get a type C breaker. It doesn't cost much.

If you remember Yandles a few years back this is how we messed you around with that new Axminster lathe of yours  :)

Come on Guys.......

New thread and spill the beans.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

That's so annoying is your Worksop all on the same circuit? If not can you plug the chuck into a separate supply?
Nothing worse than to loose the bowl in the final stages to a simple fault!

I think there were about 6 variable speed lathes on one power supply with a standard breaker. If I remember right George had a new Axminster midi lathe. When 2 or more switched on at the same time the breaker tripped. So with a little planning whenever George went to switch his lathe on a couple of other lathes were switched on at the same time. This happened a number of times over a period of time before the show really started with George getting more and more frustrated. I don't think it helped much that some (no names  :)) were enjoying the sight of George getting a little worked up, egging him on a bit and if I remember right he called Axminster to complain about the lathe he had just got.

This is an issue that happens at many shows where the electricians aren't familiar with variable speed lathes and the initial power surge at start up. It use to be a nightmare at Yandles when the turners were in the sawmill with it's outdated wiring.

What you forgot to mention mark was that Axminster sent out a brand new lathe because I told them that yandles said they would lend me a Record lathe and obviously Axminster did not want that.
It was really funny and I don't suppose I will ever be allowed to forget it.
