So to answer your last question about allowing a customer to change our perception of a piece that will not happen, but they may change their own perception.

Sounds like bull shit to me. ;)

I'd have to disagree with that. A sale happens when the goods are what the buyer wants, and when the price/quality combination meets his expectations/needs.

The problematic part with this is the expectation of the buyer, which often (for turned items) is based on a comparison to mass produced articles. This then results in a situation where people expect to be able to buy a hand turned bowl for £20, and unfortunately there are lots of hobby turners who give in to that, essentially giving their work away for free.

Depends on the location and the customer base. One of the reasons we have pretty much stopped doing 'craft fairs' as such because the things for sale are often either not of a decent quality or are at silly prices. people have got used to being able to buy the cheap imports for half the price or thigns that are cheap with a short life expectancy. If you are selling via galleries, the bigger better shows and so on then I agree with you George. Anyway, my personal ethos is that if it isn't of a decent quality I won't sell it anway. If only as a matter of personal pride. one day I may be happy with something |I make but doubt it LOL.

Multipiece turnings could bring a whole new customer base, a bit like a 'layaway' plan, a bit a month.

:) To hot for a coat but I will leave quietly :)

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

yes George it is quality that sells, unless you try craft fairs in Norfolk, then they want the goods at boot sale prices,Graham, multipiece turnings demand even more time and effort so jack the prices even higher,I need a gallery to see my stuff I think, mind they`d probably chuck it at me as its not to allot of peoples taste,so I`ll just push the boundries in my own little way ;D ::) >:( ???

Like it or loathe it this was my attempt at a more artistic piece, at the end of the day we all turn bowls so I wanted to do something different.
Thankyou all for your comments good or bad , some I will just ignore but others I will take on board and hope to learn from them.

I think the word 'attempt' is a bit of an understatement John. No art is going to suit everyones taste.

Well BHT I love this woodturning art at it's finest  :)

The base I'm not so keen on, not because they are separate bases it because they are just blocks of wood. I think the bases if they are to be singular should be round, some how blended to go in line with the piece.

But I can't wait to see what's next  :)

At the end of the day it is only the opinions of those of us on this Forum and the likelihood of any of us buying it is nil.it is obviously well made and well  finished, the test will be when it is put in front of the paying public.
