Irish Yew

Yesterday Mark Sanger and I picked up some Irish yew from a tree that had been felled in Dorset recently. The wood is soaking wet so I will rough out a load of bowls completely cover them in pva and wait until they are dry enough to finish. About two years I would think. These pics are of a couple of the blanks and roughed out just to give you an idea of what this wood is like.
Approx 11"x 4"

I have a van full it will not be a five minute job processing them but it will be well worth it.

I think Mark used a little piece of this at the club demo last night. Lovely wood. Should get some beautiful bowls out of that lot George.

strictly speaking irish yew is grown in ireland.

you got this from dorset.



i had some stripey lie that recently but it did not last once it dried as it started to blend into it's usual colour. shame really as was incredibly striking to the eye.

No it refers to the species 'Taxus baccata 'fastigiata' Ok George so I yield to your knowledge (a personal joke)  It is the species that is different , there are about 6 different types of Yew and just because a dog is born in a stable it does not make it a horse.  :)

Well, I was going to ask what Irish yew was, so thanks for the lesson, Mark, and for the exercise in restraint, George. :) :) :)

Having said that....it really does look like beautiful stuff.

i was going to point out that fastigiata refers to the cultivar not the species however this could open a whole can of worms so i'll stop there.


that article does tell you the botanical species it is referring to.

well at the last count of worm species there are 2700 so the can would have to be pretty big  :) :) :) I jest and please don't take me too seriously.  :) :) just as Acer includes so many variants I will keep my worms in the can.  :) :)
