Creusen Slow Grinder
« on: June 06, 2015, 10:08:15 PM »

I have just purchased a Cruesen slow Grinder from Axminster Tools I promised  one day I would treat myself to a decent grinder I set it up today

with the Woodcut Jigs the setting up was ok but the recess where the bolt goes through you cannot fit a washer. So up and running it was very

smooth and quiet I then decided to sharpen a few tools the wheels are 60g on the left and 100g on the right what  I was disappointed with when

using the 60gwheel it looked like I had spilt a bag of sugar on the bench and the floor I don't think the wheel will last very long.Has anyone else had

this experience the wheel is white. ???

                                                            Regards John

I agree with George ( Wow ) You have to treat a grinder like a lathe. Nice bit of kit but useless without some nice new toys to go with it.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Hi John
I have the same grinder and certainly do not have this problem. Maybe you were just unlucky and have a Friday afternoon wheel. Or maybe Creusen have a new source of wheels. Go back to Axminster, I am sure they will help you.

   Thank you for the replies.

George/ Steve don't think I could run to the cost of CBN wheel with the amount of turning I am doing at the moment due to my situation.

Graham, I think we all love new Toys.

Roger, I was intending to contact Axminster on Monday

I fitted the new wheel which arrived this morning the grit is much more like 60g the original looked like breeze block but still said 60g on the label all I have to do now is do a lot of dressing to get it to run true I did all the usual things when changing a grinding wheel make sure every thing was clean, the washers had no dings or fraze on them, moved the wheel round a few degrees at a time it still run out so down to do some dressing tomorrow.Sometimes it makes you disappointed that company's cannot get things right first time I am not blaming Axminster they just buy them in
from the manufacturer ready boxed.Another phone call tomorrow after all it was £250:00. ???

                                                                   Regards John

I have been using one of these for around 12 years, I sharpen regularly and I am still on both the original wheels. I use a Sorby jig and dress the wheels when required, although they did run true straight out of the box as I remember. Sounds like you have been very unlucky.

Hi John (BHT)
Yes I have noticed quite a lot of benefits over my old grinder. 1. It runs much slower so not so much heat is generated. 2. With the wider wheels I find I do not slip off the edge like I sometimes did on the narrow wheels.I used to have two wheels of the same grit this one has a coarse wheel and a fine one so it easier to change the shape on the coarse wheel then sharpen on the fine wheel. 3.I also runs very quiet.
I have not used it much as yet but I know it will improve my sharpening.I am using it with the Woodcut system.

                                                                            Regards John

John

I have been looking at slow grinders for about oh, fifteen years now, but I have just about settled on the Creusen slow grinder so it is good to get your thoughts on it.
