Here is an Ash Bowl I made on Saturday with the help of young George Foweraker, some of you might know him  :D !

....no idea who you're talking about!

Having said that, you've done a good job with that piece of ash. There's a couple of features that indicate that....the knot and the ripple close to the rim were potential tricky areas, but have come out fine, and cutting a bead in ash (or any other coarse-grained timber)  is never easy, but your bead looks nice and clean. Well done.

Very nice bowl Dancie. I am glad you didn't follow George into colouring it.  :)

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Many thanks for the positive comments, I am enjoying the camaraderie of other turners. The piece had weight to one side where the knot and surrounding area is so it always felt slightly out of balance – it had that soft hard soft hard problem but good practise. The beading – I’ll be honest because that’s the sort of bloke I am – was a demonstration by young George.

George is one of the most patient, competant turning teachers I know - I speak from experience of having him teach me a thing or two as well.

I think it was a bit unfair of him to give you a bit of Ash with off-centre heart though, it's well known for being denser and therefore running with a vibration.

Good effort, looking forward to your next posting.

Nice piece and well turned especially because of the imbalance. Look forward to seeing some more of your work here. Malcolm.
