Just taking the pith out of Yew!
« on: May 08, 2015, 08:13:53 PM »
Last year I took a large limb off a Yew tree, as I worked the limb back towards the trunk a large cavity opened up where the pith had rotted out.  I ended up with a load of hollow rings!  I remember being quite disappointed at the time, with the lack of usable timber so they ended up on the firewood pile.

Upon finding some of these hollow rings a couple of weeks ago, I thought to myself that I might just be able to get something out of it.  So I put one on the lathe and this is the result.

I realise that this will not suit everyone's taste, so I would love to hear all your views on this one either way. (C & C welcome)

I have a few more of these rings but I am unsure whether to turn them, so I will let your reaction to this be my judge.

10" x 6" approx. Oil and wax finish.  Thanks for looking

Kind regards

David

Ps Bryan - this is the one I was excited about a couple of weeks ago, mainly because I managed to get it off the lathe in one piece!

Me again - Sorry I have just realised the photos are too big

If you press the control button and the + - buttons it should reduce down.

They're not the easiest shapes to appreciate and understand from the photos, but I'm intrigued by them and they really appeal to me.

I have some rings that I am hanging on to waiting for inspirations. Not sure about what you have done with them personally but just my opinion. Look good, quality turning etc just a matter of personal taste.

well done on turning a bit of firewood into a lovely item - looks so fragile - it must of taken some work to get such a good finish.
why do i feel the need to turn a block of wood into shavings?

Thanks for all comments guys, I thought this one might divide opinion - which is no bad thing :)

Its was an experiment with a bit of firewood so 'nothing lost nothing gained'

Les I am sorry there not the easiest to understand. I enclose a photo below of one of the other rings so you can see the orientation and sort of 'before and after effect'.

The external shape was rather dictated by the internal hole and I tried to leave a sapwood highlight centrally on the top near the entrance hole.

Thank you all for looking and commenting

Kind regards
David

Right up my street. Love this sort of thing, always a bit of a case of 'Will I get anything out the other end?' As said plenty of skill in making this as well as nerve.

Awestruck, Amazing.

That's some turning, how did it hold together, I can't even see clingfilm and gaffa tape working for those forms.
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to comment on this one.  Your views are much appreciated.

Perhaps I will pluck up courage to have a go at another one after all.  :)

Kind regards
