... I have a young man Joe who is going to start training with me and I am sure we will both get a lot out of it....

....having just left a career where I spent 21 years passing my skills on to young lads whom showed a flair for developing similar skills, I can honestly say that there's no better buzz to be gained than seeing them thrive. Go for it George...you've got a lot that he can learn.

Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

I have to echo Les. Nothing more satisfying than seeing young people getting a buzz out of achieving something and learning new skills. Good for you George. Hope it is a new trend.

I to have a 14yo who comes to me for 2 hours a week, He is very keen to learn and picks up things very quickly. He has his own workshop and a lathe + a good set of tools.
Last week he told me that on Saturdays he is helping a local cabinet maker who has said he can have a apprentice if he wants when he leaves school. He is also slighty "esn"

nice to see apprentices being taken on,I used to teach the apprentices before I had to give up work, nothing more satisfying than when they grasp something new and that smile goes over their face.
welcome to my woodturning world

Well done George. I reckon you must teach more pupils in one month than most turners do in a year.  :)

Joe has just completed his first bowl it is turned from Ash approx. 7" x 3" considering he has only been coming in for the odd couple of hours after school occasionally I think he has done well.

He has taken to it quite easily Les I think it is partly an age thing youngsters are more adaptable than us oldies.
Joe has got mates that would be interested and I was talking to Mark Sanger about him and I taking some on for some tuition but as I see it  would be unfair to get them interested and where would they go from there.
If they have not got the equipment at home and nobody to supervise them it would be a waste of time.
I suppose it might be an idea to have  four once a month on a Saturday.
It would be good to give something back.
A bit more thought needed.

Regards George
