Loads of platters
« on: May 05, 2015, 10:18:43 PM »
Since making the large ash platter for the shop, there has been a lot of interest in platters in general, so I've been making a few for display there.

This first one is a commissions. It's a 42cm (17") piece of very characterful yew.

Next is a 35cm (14") piece of spalted beech. It was a bit of a challenge because the blank was only 1.5" thick and badly warped, so it needed a sacrificial piece of timber glued on to get it started.

...and finally, a 35cm (14") piece of brown oak which was dismissed by the mill that I bought a slab from, as being an area of that slab that was unsuitable for use, and therefore not included in the cost.

All three are sealed with dilute melemine lacquer and finished with micro-crystaline wax.

C&C always welcome.

Les

Les, You've hit pay dirt in the brown oak .. that's a nice piece, an in the money ...

There's something about the beech, beautiful piece.

Can't fault yew on the commission, got to be very happy on that too.

3 nice forms and finishes.   Cheers  Dewi

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

A great selection of platters on a great selection of timbers - I love them all!

Tell me Les, do you do your turning in the shop so people can watch you making these pieces? It would certainly be a focal point of interest for people if you did - but then again I guess it probably be quite a distraction for you!

Kind regards

David

Well turned Les, you have some choice pieces there with some real nice features and grain patterns in the wood. Les

Looking for a pun...

Looks like you'll soon have the residents of Bala eating off your plate(s). (Okay, you can groan now).

Good question, David. Space is at an absolute premium and there's no way I'd get my Record Maxi 1 in there, but I've got a little demo lathe which I plan to use in the summer at the shop.

....I can't remember the last time I saw a piece of Yew that big.
True...it was quite a find. I bought it at a local sawmill, where I found it, 3rd plank down, on the top pallet of three pallets of yew, which had all been in-stick for several months. My mate and I climbed to the top of the stack and managed to get the plank out. It was roughly 2ft wide, a little over 2ins thick, and 8ft long....a real monster to handle on the ground, but on top of a stack of wobbly pallets, it was a nightmare. Well worth it, though.
