Two from one....
« on: April 04, 2015, 06:51:35 PM »
This was a lump of unknown origin......a junction of 3 branches coming out of a single limb.  I cut it top to bottom to give two pieces.  All thoughts and comments gratefully received as always  ;D

In simple terms,

You're getting it, these are far better.

Not sure but the wood may be Cherry.

well recovered firewood in my opinion. good to see it used rather than probably going up in flames.

i'm fairly confident that the wood is spalted elm.

I'm with Steve on the timber-type...quite sure it's elm. It's going to be fairly young wood, which is why the heartwood isn't developed and coloured-up. As for the forms, their both great and it's the second one that stands out for me. I'm so pleased that you kept the warts and all. So many people would have been tempted to trim the ends back to 'good wood', but the splits and weathering on the ends just adds to the effect.

Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

Thanks Bryan  ;D  Definitely not cherry though. The wax finish has darkened it......it cut very differently to the cherry bowl I did a few days ago.

Steve & Les, yes, elm is very possible....I wasn't sure as it looks a little different to the last lot I turned but being a limb I suspect Les is right and it's younger.  We had an elm taken most of the way down about 2years ago and its spent most of that time in a pile in the open.

Glad you like the wings and warts Les, I really like the aged look it gives it.
