I'm with Steve on the timber-type...quite sure it's elm. It's going to be fairly young wood, which is why the heartwood isn't developed and coloured-up. As for the forms, their both great and it's the second one that stands out for me. I'm so pleased that you kept the warts and all. So many people would have been tempted to trim the ends back to 'good wood', but the splits and weathering on the ends just adds to the effect.
