Thought it might
« on: March 20, 2015, 03:23:15 PM »

                                      Orian a Stellar Nursery
Thought it might be a good day to post this, its a follow on from Cosmic Collision and Andromeda from last year.
So after some of the comments .... thought we would do our take on a Nebula and its evolved into a wall hanging. ( we know we have
jumped ahead 5+billoin years ) ;D. It was a SO and SO to photograph. These are taken in different lights. The base is Poplar
and lightly stained and the little planets are a mix of stained Horse Chestnut and Maple.
As always Tony did all the hard work and I had fun with the stains.
Its 31" in hight and 14 1/2" at the widest point
Comments Welcome  ..... Diane & Tony

Tony & Di,
The way the colours show in photo 3 is awesome, what a fantastic piece!

It's missing a Starship...

...coming out of the Nebula.

The feather in that board is amazing in it's length.

In the interests of being honest and not just posting 'Oh what a lovely turning'

Whilst I appreciate the skill etc in making this it isn't something that appeals to me. I could never get to grips with Picasso an the like so maybe I just have an adversity to the abstract sort of art work, lovely work, gorgeous wood but sorry, not my cup of tea design wise.

Thank you for commenting Pete ...... We realize it would not be every ones cup of tea. :) :) :)
     Di & Tony.

Thank You Bryan...... The piece came from a large Poplar crotch and it only took one single light stain
to bring all the feathering out.

I'll tell you what, if you put that in a gallery without any instructions, the gallery owner would have a nightmare trying to work out which way up to hang it  ;D.....but perhaps that's the point!

I'm trying to see it as nothing more than a combination of beautiful colours and grains - in which case it works for me - but it doesn't work for me in the holistic sense.

This is one of those pieces I find fascinating but don't really like. It is well made and beautiful wood with amazing use of colour but I just don't get it, anyway it is too big for my display cabinet.

I am afraid I have to agree with Steve on this one.

Suppose I could get a bigger display case.
Regards
Graham
I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Thank You ..Les...Steve and Graham..... For looking and your Comments.
Nebular was mentioned  in a previous post.... I did have to Google it. Its a load of Gas  :o :) :). It was  very difficult to know
what to make from this piece of Poplar, after cutting the tree down the middle and seeing all the Figure Tony was loathed to cut It up
for yet more bowls. This wood like Horse Chestnut takes colour very well, so all it needed to bring out the grain was a very light
colour wash...... YES LES you are Right..... at the end of the day..... its meant to be a colourful wall decoration..... you might need
   a big wall though. ;D ;D

Thanks Guys Your Feed Back Is Always very much appreciated
   Kindest Regards  Di And Tony
