Spalted ash bowl
« on: February 22, 2015, 06:21:39 PM »
The first of the bowls that I'm making as stock for the new shop. This one's out of a 12"x2" piece of ash from a 2 cu ft board that I bought for a tenner off a guy in Worcs, who sold me his entire stock of timber when he suddenly had to move home.....his loss was my gain!

It has just about everything you could ask for from ash, even crinkly spalt lines running down the ripples.

I sanded this up to 400 and was happy with the finish, but then I decided to back-peddle and re-sand it, but this time sanding hard with 80grit, then back up to 400. The result is very tactile - you can feel every ripple in the bowl. Finished with Danish Oil, buffed after every coat.

C&C always welcome....Les

Sometimes breaking the rules work. Sanding 'too hard' on ash or oak can give a lovely tactile finish as you have found. Especially if the wood is spalted and therefore softer. You now have a bowl that shouts 'pick me up and feel me' which makes it a much better seller, just what you want for the new gallery. Nice start.

The ripple in the spalting is really different, it almost looks like knitting, One Purl, One Plain.

That's a beauty, it won't stay on the shelf for long.
