Macrocarpa Bowl

This Macrocarpa bowl is apprx 10" x 3" .
I was going to color this bowl then I thought I would show you how pretty Macrocarpa is plain.

It certainly does look like a nice wood to work....reminds me of cherry. Is it readily available over here, George?

I would have thought so Les.
The thing you have to watch with it is it is a bit like Yew if it gets hot you get heat checks.

I have felled an awful lot of macrocarpa over the years and honestly feel it is much better for burning than turning !!   I made a bowl for some one who,s trees I felled in France a few years ago and it was OK but it is rather  easy to dent / scratch and I would not bother with it again myself .  It is a good timber though , light , strong and very decay resistant and chainsaw carvers like it , good for garden furniture , and good bits I used to sell to a big boatyard near Dartmouth which has now sadly closed and been developed . It is also one half of Leylandii  ( which is a hybrid ) so the wood has some similarities .

Mostly this goes for firewood but as you can see it is a lovely wood.
