you took one hour on a door knob????
It would have taken me about a week. I could be rich :):)

Graham
I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

I think John was getting the point across that this is the minimum charge for any job, so if you want one door knob then it is £20 but if you want five then if done in an hour it would still be £20, I am sure John will clarify.

Put it up John my minimum is £30. But then I don't do knobs or any other similar items, not my cuppa.

That is exactly what I meant Mark and I would dearly love to put my prices up but in this area the joinery companies will not spend. If I go too high the joinery companies will start using hobby turners " 'cos they can do it cheaper"not my words I hasten to add. I lost a job a few years ago to a college lecturer, turns out he was stealing the wood from the college, I can't compete with that.  (not saying all hobby turners do that mind) I am lucky to have a few very honest customers who accept that I put in honest prices, I would work for them all day.
As for the door knobs there are some that you can just rattle out, once you get going maybe up to 20 an hour depending on size, shape, timber and if they are polished or not but I do turn some that do take an hour (or more sometimes) to make and finish.
I would like to earn a living just doing arty type pieces on demand but at the moment that is not happening as I like to eat meat at least once a week!!

Hi John

there are other items that are good for production other than those for furniture people, this being my preferred route. However I fear I am straying off the thread subject so apologies to Matt.

all the best.

Of course none of this is helping Matt with his original post re pricing.
So how about 10 of us give a price of what we would sell it for if we had made it and then onec we have 10 prices we can average the cost and Matt will have his answer.
we will assume it is finished to the highest of standards as expected by all of us.
If I had made this I would prbably put it up for £168.

8" hollow form well finished around 80.00 - 100.00 but this could be more if it's expensive wood.

C & C I like the top 2/3 don't like the bottom part for shape. There looks from the blown up image to be a bit of torn grain at the 1 o'clock mark down form the right hand lip, just by the knot there seems to be a little something that's filled with sanding dust and at the base it does not look that smooth. The top and bottom marks could just be where the image is blown up but there's the problem without having the item in your hand.

that's my 2 pennies worth :)

I'd look for about £60-80, depending on the venue.

It's a nice piece of timber, well turned so should be easy to sell.

Did any of you look at Matt's page before you started commenting. I feel sure the AWGB, RPT and Turners Company will be pleased with the support you have given him.

I might be wrong of course, I usually am but I did  check first.

I have not commented on this thread I have waited for a short while before doing so I do not always agree with the threads and comments of PhilipS

I find on this occasion I am pleased I looked at the two links that Philip added to his comments. The one where Matt won a prize at the Worshipful

Company of Woodturners the other was the Youth Training that is run by The AWGB and Mark S was coaching him. I do hope some of the comments

put on this Forum has not put Matt off! ???
