Why ?

Graham
I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Why ?

To see if you can? if you are selling then it has little commercial value IME apart from the occasional collector.

IMHO anything less than about 5mm would feel a little fragile.

pete's right, because i can...

to be fair graham i take it as a challenge to myself as one or two bowl ended up quite thin and light by accident and i wanted to see how thing i can go.

the latest one is about 1-1.5mm thick in the wall up to about 2-3 at the base.

when i find my calipers i'll be able to check but they are lost amongst the shavings at present.

I made a couple of thin walled shallow bowls from holly a long time ago. Each was between 0.5mm and 0.75mm thick. They were surprisingly strong and if dropped, they would just float down and land without breaking. The things we do just for fun!  ;)

I have sen lampshades made which I suppose is pretty much what you are looking at. They were usually turned in green wood if I remember correctly.

Steve,
Some years ago, I made a bowl that you could see everything through because I failed to follow Graham's first rule of woodturning!
