« on: November 03, 2014, 10:52:17 PM »
Hi All,
London Plane platter 275 mm diameter.
Outer section has been textured and stained red using Chestnut spirit stain.
Finish is lemon oil and non stained areas buffed with light coat of paste wax.
Regards
Ken

looks more like an off centered bowl to me  :) :) :)

Looks great, I like the contrast of the textured colour.

Trying to workout if texturing was done on center or off, as it looks form the picture to be coarser in the wider section and fine in the narrow edge.. or it's just me ..

Done an excellent job, color works and nice detail too.   Cheers  David

Hi Ken....it's got a lot going for it, has this platter. London plane always gives us interesting pieces, and you've added to it a colour that is sympathetic, reflecting the slight pinkish colour of the wood - a good choice. Added to that, the concentricity creates even more interest and the fact that it's a good size.

Just a note about posting photos. Do you have the capacity to resize images to a smaller size, so that we can see the whole image without having to scroll around the screen. I used to have the same problem, then dowloaded an image resizer free of charge.

Hi David,
I off-set the platter and textured using the large version of the sorby tool, then applied the stain. Next step cut out the bowl area.
When applying the stain care needs to be taken to not overload the brush at the outer and inner edges to prevent seepage into the turned areas.

Hi Les,
The photos were taken and posted from my iPad (new Toy) what programme did you download?

Regards,
Ken

This is the one I use at the moment if I'm uploading direct to the post but other than that I add links for my pictures to save space on the forum server.

I like off-centre turning it has a uniqueness to it you just can't get from centre turned items. Nice Job

I'm rather taken by the mottling under the stain.

Is that something you've done or is it markings in the timber please.

Hi Bryan,
The plank this piece came out of was not clean. When I got it (at no cost) it was behind a wood store covered in nettles/moss/slugs and snails. I think the dark patches are water stains under the moss growth. The wood is sound and there are some areas of nice looking burr
As the plank was only just over an inch thick I did not want to cut back too far, also the spirit stain seems to emphasised the marking
